Artificial Intelligence - A New Future - Part 1

Imagine the day, when our Jawans will not die and their children will not cry…

Imagine the future, when our farmers will be able to increase their income and not die in poverty…

Imagine the day, when the nation’s poor will not be illiterate but will get access to quality education…

Imagine the glorious future, wherein residents of rural areas will not die only because of one reason - a dearth of health-care centers…

The three dots at the end are for your imagination for an amazing future, but you will probably be like, Lakshmy… Is this possible?

Yes! Don’t just imagine. Embrace the reality.

Soon the day will come when our Jawans will not die, and their children will not cry, as artificially intelligent robots will man the border and this is not science fiction! US Defense Agency - DARPA with Boston Dynamics, has created spy robots and drones, which can be sent before soldiers to get information. There is also a state-of-art rough terrain robot called the “BigDog”, which can run, walk, hike in snow, water, mud, and carry 150 kg load to assist the soldier.

The future has come, when our farmers will be able to increase their income and not die in poverty by using drones, which will scan the farm, identify weeds, spray pesticides and by using AI apps like Plantix, which can analyze the Disease your crop is infected with and provide solutions. All you have to do is take a picture of the diseased crop and upload it and there you go! Instant solution on your palmtop.

The dream of literacy has come true, the day when the nation’s poor will get access to quality education. How? Well, with the help of robots and AI-powered chatbots which can answer student’s questions and enable them to learn at their own pace. Google has launched an app called “Bolo” for primary students across Uttar Pradesh. It has an AI tutor, which teaches students to read and encourages the student to read out loud and if they get stuck, it helps them, like a real teacher.

The glorious healthy future has come in, people residing in rural areas don’t have to succumb to diseases only and only due to the shortage of health-care centers. These people can now get access to quality medical advice because of Virtual AI assistants. ChironX is a Haryana based start-up who has developed an AI-based software which scans retinal images to detect eye diseases and provides diagnosis. With this both cost and time can be saved as it eliminates the need of a doctor for primary diagnosis. Manipal hospitals too has deployed an AI called “IBM Watson” for cancer treatment, which can analyze a patient’s medical records and prescribe treatment.

Artificial Intelligence is paving the way for development. Gone are the days when money lenders could scam poor farmers. Grameen Guru developed by Grameen foundation with Accenture, is a multilingual chatbot to help people who cannot read or understand written material. Using the app, one can hold the phone over any written material for example, a bank document and the app will explain the material in a simplified way, in the language preferred by the user.

Such is the power of the technology which is paving a path for development and upliftment of society. A happy reality wherein basic necessities are fulfilled. With artificial intelligence, it is a new future indeed.

I will be writing more on AI, its technicalities and its impact on employment. Stay tuned!!
